“It is a well-established tradition that, after lunch, my friends from work—Andrew, Alessandro, and Alessio—and I go for a walk. The ‘Orti’ tour is one of the classic routes: from Via Benedetto Croce, you go down towards the Tre Fontane park, cross the urban gardens and arrive at a tiled square that runs alongside Viale del Tintoretto. The square is used as a parking lot. On that day in July 2022, the square was home to a small improvised dump, a disorderly accumulation of drawers, boxes, clothes, and documents. On the ground, easily visible among the rubbish, were a large number of slides and some old photographs. “The walk ends here today,” I said to my friends, “we absolutely must analyze this material!” This is the story of those photographs saved from oblivion and the surprising discovery of their author. Two days later, the square was empty again, a simple, little-used parking lot.
