Samuel Gratacap, Bilateral, 2021

After several years, Samuel Gratacap returns to places that bear the marks of a precarious, temporary occupation, of a passage and of contemporary history: that of the routes of exile around the Mediterranean.

Bilateral echoes the presence—real or suggested—of exiles on the Franco-Italian border, and the question of their passage through this transalpine region.

It is also a work on the landscape, on both sides of the border, the one that alternately separates and unites us. Samuel Gratacap has sought to set his camera there and listen to the people he met, in a critical engagement with the media images and translational representations that are offered of them.
