GU.PHO. – International Vernacular Photography FestivalV Edition – On Ethics
This edition of the GU.PHO Festival offers a reflection on the ethics and legitimacy of using other people’s visual materials and invites us to critically interrogate the gaze, particularly the Western and Eurocentric one.
This year’s program features works that focus on the process of re-appropriation and re-signification of material, as in The Fold, by Hoda Hafshar, or on archives of images found and re-ordered according to ironic and critical taxonomies, as in Picture Library, by Joachim Schmid, testimonies of a vital use of photography, such as those narrated by Martina Bacigalupo in Chiou Taur Wu – Let Me Show You How Big the Sky Is, reflections on colonial perspectives and appropriative gazes, as in the case of Salomè Erni’s work, Interesting Things, works on commercial photographs that transform into involuntary reportages as in Emanuela Nebuloni’s installation, Postbox Ghana, and even from ironic analyses on the potential dissemination of behavioral data such as those played on by Enrico Fagiani, in WinJpeg – an instant lottery of scratch-off tickets – to the re-signification of images through new clippings, as in Marco Lanza’s work, Ricreazione, ending with works Focusing on the power of captions, as in Jean-Marie Donat’s Beauty and the Beast, to projects that once again focus on irony as an investigative tool, as in the case of Automotive Monogamy by Matteo Ferrari.
In addition to the exhibitions, the festival features a series of meetings, portfolio reviews, and workshops.
This year, Leporello, besides presenting a selection of publications devoted to the festival’s topics, is also involved in the program of talks and portfolio reviews.
