Kourtney Roy, Failed Postcards From Napoli, 2026

Failed Postcards From Napoli was created during her artistic residency at the Spot Home Gallery in Naples in 2025. The artist continues her exploration of the staged self-portrait in a new series that plunges into the heart of urban margins. True to her visual language, she summons an Italian cinematic sensibility, between neorealism and popular comedies, to extract a visual material that is at once whimsical and melancholic. Far from any picturesque tourism, she captures an inverted Naples, exuberant and secretive, much like her characters.                                                                                                                                                                                   With this new photographic series, the artist roams the city’s interstices, its shadowy areas, its liminal spaces, “the un-self of Naples.” She diverts clichés and frozen emblems to reveal a less visible, more ambiguous Naples, where one drifts between façades and fictions. Inspired by films such as Reality and Dogman by Matteo Garrone, or Mamma Roma by Pasolini and Amarcord by Fellini, she conjures female figures both tough and flamboyant, stern yet gentle, clad in cheap, garish clothing that become vehicles of loud, baroque, and resilient identities.

All these images by Roy, where reality becomes a set, with a host of sparkling, vibrant characters, are like the beginnings of a film whose script she is constantly rewriting. In these stagings, photography becomes a field of performance, where the artist’s body, multiplied through her doubles, questions the limits of vision, between provocation and vulnerability.
