“Transhumance lets you walk on green ground for over thirty kilometres, and it’s one of those things that has gone on for so many centuries that what makes no sense is to stop.” – Valerio Berardo

Transumando follows Valerio Berardo’s transhumance along the Castel di Sangro-Lucera and Celano-Foggia tratturi (drove roads) in Molise, from 9 to 11 May 2024, starting from the village of Duronia and arriving at the pastures of Capracotta.

Transhumance is a pastoral practice with ancient origins, still carried out around the world today in different forms depending on geographical and social contexts. It consists of the seasonal movement of livestock from the mountains to the plains and back again.

As well as protecting natural habitats from abandonment, transhumance safeguards the delicate balance of mountain ecosystems, proving to be a vital safeguard for biodiversity. Alongside its ecological significance, it holds deep cultural and identity value for the community, bearing witness to knowledge and serving as a forge of practices and traditions that have come down to us.

What gives transhumance its depth is the love that permeates its every gesture: affection for the animals, respect for and knowledge of nature, together with human cooperation, all show in every step, turning an act of subsistence into an expression of devotion and of rootedness in one’s own land. Far from being a mere relic of the past, transhumance and pastoralism prove to be a compass for the present, redefining the very sense of belonging to a territory.

City Ravioli is a widespread festival of food arts and cultures in Rome’s Municipio V.
From 16 to 31 October, Municipio V turns into a festival made for tasting. Workshops, exhibitions, performances, talks and tastings fill shops, studios and venues, as stops on one great city-wide menu.
In the first weekend, from 16 to 18 October, the festival’s first course is Pigneto. From 22 to 25 October, the second weekend puts Torpignattara and Centocelle on the same plate in a unique pairing.
And if you’re still not full: exhibitions and installations will remain open to visit until the 31st.
