Gabriele Basilico documented Aldo Rossi’s work for almost twenty years, chronicling his rise to become a leading figure in international architecture (Pritzker Prize 1990). His photographs reveal a deep professional affinity: the two shared Milanese roots, degrees from the Politecnico, an interest in social issues and urban transformation, and, above all, the moral perspective through which they engaged with the world. Having grown up in a Milan where industrial civilisation was in its twilight, they found in that climate the opportunity to create a new language that nevertheless remained true to tradition. This volume brings together, for the first time, Basilico’s photographs of Rossi’s architecture and is enriched by contributions from Chiara Spangaro and Pier Paolo Tamburelli, project descriptions drafted by Rossi himself, as well as the writings each dedicated to the other.
