Nuovo inventario dei menhir salentini, by Giuseppe Fanizza. With Giuseppe Fanizza, Juan Lopez Cano, Francesco Careri and Carlo Birrozzi – ICCD Director. Published by ShowDesk
Nuovo inventario dei menhir salentini is a photographic journey-with black-and-white film and view camera-to discover the ancient menhirs still present in contemporary Salento, accompanied by texts by Francesco Careri and Filomena Ranaldo.
“This inventory lists, ordered by longitude from east to west, the menhirs I photographed in Salento between 2021 and 2022.
They are layered, often Christianized stones, incorporated into flowerbeds, traffic circles and street furniture, besieged by the contemporary but not vanquished: their energy as stones is enough to arouse respect and care from local communities for centuries – millennia according to some – and to transform random places into precise locations.
Like pins stuck on a map, menhirs serve to keep us from getting lost, responding to an innate collective will to understand an otherwise indecipherable nature and orient ourselves in the ‘chaos of the world.’
Reflecting in the distant silhouette of a menhir, the wayfarer measures the steps needed to reach it: he defines space and time and thus understands the landscape he passes through.” -except from Giuseppe Fanizza text
