Presentation of the magazine HAPAX + Portfolio reviews with Christiane Monarchi, Hapax co-editor

Hapax Magazine takes its name from the literary term ‘hapax legomenon’ describing a one-off, creative departure from an author’s oeuvre — something unique and new and ‘said only once’ in their practice. Hapax Magazine now makes this idea visual by commissioning international lens-based artists and curators who are keen to test new ideas which depart from their previously established creative practice. The result: a magazine quite distinct from the established model, as the content hasn’t existed before, and will only be seen in its printed pages.

The editors of Hapax Magazine seek submissions of interest from artists and curators who would like to apply for a commission to create a new photographic project or curated selection for publication in this biannual magazine. Twice per year, Hapax Magazine seeks to commission several artists and curators (£500 each) to produce new photographic projects for publication in its magazine. Encouraging submissions from everyone, regardless of experience, qualification, nationality, geographical location or background, these new images and ideas together create a truly unique publication.

HAPAX ISSUE 7

Hapax is opening its next open call for issue 7, for artists and curators to submit their ideas for the next issue of the magazine. The application period will run Oct 11 – November 10 and details for submission will be on the Hapax website www.hapaxmagazine.com shortly.

BRISTOL PHOTO FESTIVAL x HAPAX

Hapax Magazine is also collaborating with Bristol Photo Festival, for its open-call for new photographic projects. Artists and photographers are invited to submit a body of work, which may be in progress and not yet published or exhibited. The winner will be supported to develop a solo exhibition to be presented at Bristol Photo Festival 2026 and a concurrent feature in Hapax Magazine.
