A Faggot is a Unit is an artist’s book by Berlin-based artist, filmmaker and writer Padraig Robinson. This publication brings together two original scripts for unrealized video works by Robinson and a collection of research material presented as a retrograde calendar. The screenplays, / Imagine Prompt: Catfish Monogamy and The Jealousy of Sagittarius A*, both deal with contemporary life and creative work intersecting with digital culture and current anxieties regarding AI. Also. These are followed by A Faggot is a Unit (Homage to Hanne Darboven), a collection of archival photographs and scanned objects, as well as stock images and graphics from the Internet collected by Robinson over the course of seven years (2015 – 2021). The images further divide the disorienting narratives presented in the two scripts to offer a kaleidoscopic and unpredictable way of reading the stories, functioning simultaneously as a visual companion and counterpoint to the scripts.

Writing and editing are at the heart of Robinson’s editorial and film work, which investigates queer histories and the contemporary image economy, not as new subjects per se, but as integral forms of knowledge to question stories of perceived liberation. We are committed to representing diverse voices and perspectives that challenge and build on our vision of bringing material from the frenetic digital experience to book form.
