In May 1970 Carlo Mollino reached Osaka for the Universal Exposition. It’s a long journey with stops in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Kyoto. He has a camera with him and, little by little, he seems to be passionate about a civilization he does not yet know. He is fascinated by women, places of tradition (temples, gardens, pagodas), but also new architecture, construction details, the swarming of the crowd. Mollino captures a Japan suspended between ancient rites and modernity that in a few years will change the face of the country and of which the Expo is an anticipation. The book contains texts by Claudio Giunta, Corrado Levi and Fulvio Ferrari that contextualize the journey and deepen the relationship between Mollino and photography. The volume is completed by a series of shots that Mollino took on other trips to the East.
