«We heard that not too long ago there were witches who would rub themselves with oils to take flight, beyond the sea that kept them in their place, and that at night they would reach the mainland where, under a great tree, they would feast on everything that the barren land did not offer them. Those among them who could not escape were turned into snakes, fleeing into the forest never to return, and that is why among Men there is the custom of crushing the heads of snakes with a stick, so that the witches can neither return to their human form nor reproduce, perpetuating their lineage.»
The publication Lavoro Oscuro (Dark Work), by ৺ ෴ ර ∇ ❃ ꩜ ﹌﹌ @cnsss_ — Sonia D’Alto, Claudia Gangemi, Susanna Gonzo, Sofia Melluso, and nao — with Marea Art Project, originates from the Sicilian coast of Alicudi and takes shape along the Amalfi Coast, amid full moons, witches, magic spells, healing rituals, mythologies, self-awareness, and stories that intertwine and emerge from the collective memory of the communities of Praiano and Positano.
Born from a residency on the Amalfi Coast as part of the Marea Art Project research and artist residency programme, the publication is an invitation to take flight together by sea, following the rituals of the janare.
