August 21, 1964: Palmiro Togliatti dies. August 28, 1964: the city of Stavropolsul-Volga, a thousand kilometers south-east of Moscow, is renamed Togliatti. April 22, 1970: on Lenin’s 100th birthday, the first Zhigulì car comes out of the AutoVAZ in Togliatti; in 1976 the units produced will be three million: the great leap forward of Soviet motorization. Between 1966 and 1970 there is an Italian epos: to build the gigantic production plant in Togliatti – a factory twice the size of Mirafiori, in a city born together with the factory, between unimaginable difficulties and fatigue – they were technicians and workers from Fiat, the Fiat of Vittorio Valletta and Gianni Agnelli. Fifty years later, Claudio Giunta and Giovanna Silva traveled between Turin and Togliatti to tell that story by collecting family memories, comical and dramatic, and listening to the voices – Italian and Russian – of those who, young at the time, took part in the enterprise.
