Traces is a quiet passage, a practice of attention. A book that asks to be looked at without haste, allowing the images to work through sedimentation, like the landscape they evoke. It offers no reassurance, but rather a narrow opening for listening and relation: the point at which photography stops describing and begins to question.
The book is developed from the ‘Sardinia Commission’ by Vanessa Winship and George Georgiou, a project by AR/S – Arte Condivisa in Sardegna and promoted by the Fondazione di Sardegna. The work of the two British authors, active for over twenty years in documentary and research-based photography, focuses on the island’s western coast and inland areas, offering a narrative that deliberately avoids any form of spectacle. It preserves and makes accessible an experience of residency and production that contributes to the construction of a shared visual heritage, gathering images that engage in dialogue with the history, geography, and identity of the places. The result is an open narrative, free of didacticism, that invites the viewer to linger within ambiguity. Fortified landscapes, abandoned mines, depopulated settlements, and disused infrastructure form a severe, contemplative tableau. The near-total absence of the human figure heightens the images’ density, allowing minor details – a weathered wall, an empty window, a sagging sign – to surface as traces of lives and stories that endure over time.

Enriched by texts by Giacomo Spissu, Franco Carta, Marco Delogu, Elisa Medde, Laurie Hurwitz, and Bachisio Bandinu, Traces emerges as a meeting point between document and perception, testimony and critical reflection. It does not seek definitive answers, but instead opens up spaces for interpretation, inviting the viewer to look longer, and more deeply.
