Luciano Maggiore’s Very Cheap Non-Human Animal Imitations amicably lampoons the wonderful presentations of bird songs and other protagonists of the animal world published by ornithologist and editor Jean-Claude Roche in the 1980s. “The recordings were collected in 2021 on the couch at home, using an old cassette recorder. Without attempting to refine a vocal technique, I relied on the first impression and timbral proximity that I believed I had in common with some of the animal-non-humans I imitated. I hope that soon, as the world moves in an anti-speciesist direction, the naivete of this work may become an outrageous homage to a different present.”
