From the skies of Gaza to the trenches of Ukraine, from the uprisings in Syria to the borders of the Mediterranean, conflicts burst onto our screens and into our daily conversations, redefining what we call reality. The battle is no longer just about control of territories, but also about the production of truth, which is increasingly manipulated, contested and emptied of meaning. In this scenario, many artists are investigating state violence, environmental destruction and repressive technologies. At the same time, aesthetics is entering traditionally distant fields: journalists and lawyers analyse open source videos and satellite images as forensic evidence. This contamination of knowledge and languages is what Fuller and Weizman call “investigative aesthetics”: mobilising sensibilities from art, architecture and visual practices to challenge power and construct new counter-narratives. Drawing on epistemology, ecology and technology, this book introduces counter-forensic methods and opens up a new field that intertwines investigation and aesthetics, offering tools for understanding and confronting the devices of power in the present.
