After a short introduction to his early work, featuring pictures which the artist has kept in his studio, this publication sums up Gerhard Richter’s paintings from an intensive period of work in 1995-1996. In addition to mainly abstract works, a cycle of eight pictures in smaller format of an intimate, private nature developed. Gerhard Richter has already used autobiographic elements in earlier years, but they appear stronger in this sequence of motifs which portray his young wife Sabine with child in a madonna-like attitude. With its full page colored illustrations, this book, designed by the artist himself, is an extraordinary document of contemporary art.
