Published to accompany a major retrospective at the museum of modern art, Cindy Sherman presents the stunning range of work produced by the artist during the thirty-five year career. Lavishly illustrated with approximately 180 works ( some never before published), the book highlights all of Sherman’s major series, including the pioneering Untitled Films Stills (1977-80), the so called- center-folds (1981), history potraits (1989-90), and head-shots (2000-2002), and two recent series that foreground the experience of ageing in today’s youth- and status obsessed culture. In the plate section, Sherman’s photographs- reproduced with astonishing color fidelity using a new printing process- are grouped thematically to suggest the common threads that run through multiple series. An introduction essay by the exhibition curator, Eva Respini, presents an overview of Sherman’s career and investigates some of the dominant themes in her work while also explaining the theoretical discourse that has surrounded it from the very beginning.
