Jim Goldberg, Coming and Going – Signed, 2023

Jim Goldberg has spent more than two decades creating the work that went into Coming and Going, creating a unique autobiographical diary of sorts.
Since 1999, Goldberg has photographed every aspect of his daily life and then returned to the studio to digest and reinvent these images through his celebrated practice of collaging, annotating, editing and recombining. Dissecting an individual life with rigorous candour and confessional candour, the book simultaneously tells a universal story of loves and losses, encounters and detachments, and the ways in which we come to understand them.
Here we see an artist attempting to deal with mortality without succumbing to melancholy.

Goldberg’s visual language uses sequence and narrative with feverish intensity to reflect the constant movement and mutability of life. History, memory and imagination collide in his vividly textured practice; Goldberg offers a sweeping account, at once fierce and vulnerable, of a life in search of an elusive sense of universality in intimate and personal events.
