Le visionarie collect twenty-nine stories that outline the contours of a world that is futuristic, disturbing, dreamlike or just plain strange. These are stories that range from science fiction to fantasy, from horror to weird fiction, written by women who have made the history and present of fantastic fiction, and who encounter a taste for the invention of other worlds and feminist reflection. The result is a kaleidoscope of imaginary stories that, in an unexpected and never ordinary way, link genre literature and genre literature. Among the visionaries who alternate in this anthology, we find as much classical names as Ursula K. Le Guin and Angela Carter as new protagonists of speculative fiction such as Nnedi Okorafor, both historical names such as Octavia E. Butler and Joanna Russ as figures unclassifiable as Leonora Carrington , so many teachers of the fantastic as Tanith Lee and Alice Bradley (aka James Tiptree Jr.) as writers still little known in Italy as the Argentine Angelica Gorodischer, the Finnish Leena Krohn and the Indian Vandana Singh. To take care of the anthology, the couple symbol of the weird rebirth of the 2000s: Ann and Jeff VanderMeer. The first, already director of the legendary magazine Weird Tales; the second, author among other things of the successful Trilogy of Area X.
The Italian edition of the book was coordinated by Claudia Durastanti and Veronica Raimo, who, to translate the various stories, summoned a group of authors, journalists and academics from both the world of genre fiction and not: Emmanuela Carbé, Marta Maria Casetti, Gaja Cenciarelli, Silvia Costantino, Livia Franchini, Tiziana Mancinelli, Sara Marzullo, Francesca Matteoni, Oriana Palusci, Lorenza Pieri, Chiara Reali, Clara Miranda Scherffig, Nicoletta Vallorani, Cristina Verrienti.
Ann VanderMeer founded the Buzzcity Press publishing house and was the director of Weird Tales, the historic American magazine dedicated to horror and fantasy. For her work as editorial curator, she was awarded the Hugo Award and the British Fantasy Award.
