One of the many disused sanatoria in the Abkhazian seaside resort Gagra, a well-known holiday destination under the Soviet Union. Until recently time here had stood still, but now construction and investment are again in full swing. ‘We have everything here to help the Olympic Games. Natural deep-sea harbours, two airports, building materials and many hotels. It’s up to the Russians to decide what they want from us and our infrastructure needs to be improved, but we are ready to help make
Sochi 2014 a success.’ Georgia has already announced its intention to boycott the Games it Russia uses ‘its’ – read Abkhazian – territory illegally.
