In Piccola storia della fotografia by Walter Benjamin, appears for the first time in 1931 in the magazine Die literarische Welt, where it is published in three subsequent articles. It is a somewhat pioneering text, one of the first attempts to pull the strings of a discipline that in those years was establishing itself on several fronts – exhibitions, publishing, graphics – and in an increasingly massive and accessible way to the general public. Benjamin identifies the themes and research that move photography from the first daguerreotypes to the authors of his time, intertwining his story with a theoretical debate on the links between art and photography, which is still very topical today. This edition – the first illustrated in Italy – proposes some of the images chosen by Benjamin in 1931.
