Starting from the observation of architectural practices “of action”, the aim of this publication is to discover the network of contemporary interpreters who have public space as a field of intervention and whose projects address the redefinition of the idea of community. Passing through a retroactive path, it analyzes and catalogs modes of intervention sharing intents, theoretical assumptions and design outcomes with the so-called “action practices”. The selected projects show different spatial typologies: from the market to the square, from cultural to local social activities centers, from the Universal Expo to “inflatable” events. The different spatial situations share a series of aspects: flexibility of use, temporary, construction process, reversibility, adaptability, reuse (both material and functional), site-specificity, spatial indeterminacy. This book is also a tribute to those authors who have imagined the project not as something unaltered in time, but as a changing process in all its vital phases.
