The image role between undergroud and commercial publishing…and presentation of Contesto n° 3, published by Friscospeaks
with Francesco Ciaponi – founder of Edizioni del Frisco and Centro Studi Edizioni del Frisco,
Stefano Cipolla – art director L’Espresso, Guendalina Piselli – co-founder Centro Studi Edizioni del Frisco and in charge of the sector Magazine Contesto rivista
What happened to the narrative power of the image?
In the pages of daily newspapers and those of weekly magazines, the role of the image appears to be subordinate to that of the text. The image, whether photographic or graphic, rushes in as a functional element for aesthetics, but not for understanding the text. In contrast, the writing often turns out to be necessary to the reading of the visual contribution. How do hybrid publishing products, difficult to label, such as l’Essenziale o Cose Spiegate Bene fit into this landscape?
Experiences from underground and independent publishing show how even today-despite the surplus of digital content-images live independently of text.
Can mainstream presses look at such experiments and apply them to their own products?
