Since 1995, Italian photographer Guido Guidi has been working on photographic studies of the Brion family’s memorial vault, designed by Carlo Scarpa and located in San Vito d’Altivole. Scarpa (1906–1978) is one of the twentieth century’s most important architects; this monument was designed in the 1970s, and it is considered one of his most important works. Using a large-format camera, Guidi—an admirer of Scarpa’s work—has observed and examined the burial site at different times of the day and in different seasons, over a period of many years. With much patience, and by constantly changing his standpoint and perspective, Guidi has created remarkable works that highlight the inventive details of the tomb. Scarpa’s monument can be seen as a clear, formally strict, yet multifaceted work, whose effects alter depending on the light and time of day, but which nevertheless remains consistently impressive all of the time.
